Carol Ann Duffy, Scheherazade

Dumb was as good as dead;the bees

better to utter.

Words were a silver thread

stitching the night.

The first story I said

led to the light.

Fact was in black and white;

fiction was colour.

What was lost was heldCarol Ann

inside a tale.

Only the silent fail.

Abracadabra.

Scheherazade is from Carol Ann Duffy’s 2012 collection, ‘The Bees’. It is based on the tale of Scheherazade from ‘The Arabian Nights: Tales of 1,001 Nights’.
